How long should my bed last

As a guideline, try to replace your bed every 6 to 9 years. How long a bed lasts, depends on the quality of the bed, how it's been looked after and the changes our bodies go through as we get older.

Comfort and support play a bigger role later on. Re-evaluate your bed and the quality of your sleep from time to time. If either of these have been impacted, it could well be that it's time for a new bed.

King Bed size - Width

Measured from outside to outside, across the head or the foot of the bed, the width of a king bed should be approximately 183cm. Due to the materials used in the construction of the bed there can be a slight variance in the size.

King Bed size - Length

King size beds are available in 2 standard lengths (most manufacturers offer both).
  • 188cm - or Standard Length, is not as popular in the king size bed when compared to other bed sizes. Since the king size bed, thanks to it's size, is more luxurious, it makes even more sense to have extra length.
  • 200cm - At 12cm longer it's referred to as Extra Length, and in our opinion, should almost be standard on king size beds.

Are larger king beds available

Larger size beds such as a King Size Super Size, which are available in other countries, are very difficult to source here.

King size beds are the largest beds available from major South African bed manufacturers.

A king size base consists of two separate single (92cm) bed bases. This makes the otherwise near impossible task of manoevering a king size bed up difficult stairs, or around tight corners possible.

The two single bed bases next to each other are the exact size required to support a king size mattress.

Most manufacturers will not deviate from their set range to attend to special custom requests for larger beds.

Smaller, more specialist foam factories are able to accommodate requests for larger mattresses. Since foam is formed in large blocks, it's easier for them to cut special sizes.
